Mental Health for Seniors

As we age, it’s important to take steps toward keeping our mental health in check. Mental health is just as important as physical health. With that said, here are some tips to help keep your mind active and healthy as you grow older:

  1. Stay Social – staying socially active and connected can help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, as well as reduce the risk of developing mental health issues. Try to stay in touch with family and friends, join a club or support group that interests you, like the run/walk group we discussed a couple of months ago (click here to read that blog). In addition, volunteering and giving back will help motivate you because helping others always makes us feel good.
  2. Exercise Regularlyphysical activity releases endorphins which can have a positive effect on mood and overall wellbeing. Exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous; even a daily walk or brisk run outdoors can help.
  3. Try New Things – learning new things and taking on new challenges is great for keeping your mind active and engaged. You can explore hobbies such as painting, woodworking, or gardening which will also provide a great source of relaxation.
  4. Take Time for Yourself – it’s important to take time out of your day for yourself and do activities that you enjoy. This could be reading a book, going for a walk or listening to music.
  5. Get Quality Sleep – make sure to get enough sleep each night to feel refreshed and rested the next day. This will help improve concentration, productivity, and overall wellbeing.
