If you are a parent, or if you are planning to become a parent or…
The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) was a landmark legislation when it was signed into law on July 26, 1990. Finally, laws which gave civil rights to people with disabilities.
This was the first piece of legislation in the world to specifically address the needs of people with disabilities and prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities in the areas of employment, public services, public accommodations, and telecommunication.
Unfortunately, even today, 23 years later, many violations continue to this day.
Here is a list of 10 of the most glaring and common violations of the ADA:
- No accessible entrance
- Baby strollers in the wheelchair spot in public transportation
- Bathrooms not accessible
- No accessible parking spot
- Fired and/or not hired because of a disability
- Business owners refusing service dogs
- Ineffective and/or no curb cuts
- Cruise ship inaccessibility
- Gas station does not assist with pumping gas
- Cluttered and/or narrow store aisles
Recently, a good friend of mine was denied access to a corporate center in midtown Manhattan, of all places, because he had his service dog with him. Quite, outrageous and happening too often.
We all have a stake in making sure that everyone in this country is afforded basic civil rights.
