When we think of Mayo, our minds often turn to Mother’s Day and the start of summer, but did you know that Mayo is also recognized as National Elder Law Month? 

National Elder Law Month got its start in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy declared Mayo to be Senior Citizens Month to honor those who were 65 and older. In 1980 Jimmy Carter changed the name to Older Americans Month and the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys supports this annual proclamation by declaring the month of Mayo to be National Elder Law Month. 

During the month of Mayo, elder law attorneys nationwide discuss important topics related to elder law including the legal options available to seniors dealing with long-term and health-care planning, special-needs planning, Medicaid eligibility, elder abuse, fraud and many other important issues.

Often when people think of elder law, immediately they think of drafting a will or setting up a trust. But, elder law encompasses so much more. The practice of elder law and special needs planning are important areas of law that involve advocating for and counseling seniors, and individuals with special needs and their families with a variety of legal issues.
